The MoneyMob Talkabout program is an innovative program bringing two-way learning to people in remote Indigenous communities to help them positively manage their money. The program teams visit remote communities throughout the Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia and spend time listening and learning about how money is viewed and used in Indigenous communities while at the same time sharing knowledge and information through a series of fun, engaging and culturally appropriate “learning experiences”.
MoneyMob Talkabout and its messages have been developed after extensive consultation with members of remote communities, Money Management Service Providers and experts in the field of community education.
The “learning experiences” in the program will cover four main areas:
- Be an informed consumer, and avoid getting “ripped off”
- Make wise money decisions
- Get the most out of banks and financial systems
- Connect to people and resources that can help you.
Two custom-designed four wheel drives, each with two Community Educators on board have visited more than 70 remote communities in the past 15 months, bringing a series of presentations, games, activities and workshops, which can be tailored to the needs of each community.
The program is designed to be social and involve people of all ages and who have different roles in the community. There is something for everyone – whether it’s students designing a $500 note to promote discussion about how trading and currency develops in different cultures, adults playing a money hunt game where activity sheets are initialled by others in their community who fulfil the requirements in a type of people bingo or, simply, children tracing and colouring coins. Interactive and video technology will be used to generate interest and enhance the program’s ability to encourage people to get involved and share their stories. This includes the use of a large inflatable cinema screen, digital stories and electronic smart boards.
A key aim of the program is to link communities with existing local Money Management Service Providers and other financial services, who can provide ongoing support and advice as people put new tools and knowledge into practice.
